Three meals, with milk alongside

Your baby now eats solid food three times a day, with healthy snacks in between. Milk has become the supplement rather than the main event.

Wind formula down towards the first birthday — from 12 months, whole cow's milk can replace it. Toddler milks are not needed (AAP).

What changes this month

Three meals a day with healthy snacks in between, and milk becomes the supplement rather than the main event. Finger foods belong here: soft fruit and cooked vegetable sticks, so your baby learns to pick up and bite.

An example day

This is what a day could look like. It is an example, not a prescription: your baby tells you when they are hungry, and that shifts from day to day.

Work towards fixed eating and drinking moments: three meals and at most two snacks. Grazing all day blunts the appetite. You decide what and when, your child decides how much.

Move from bottle to an open or straw cup between 9 and 12 months — prolonged bottle use affects the teeth.

What about breastfeeding?

With breastfeeding you don’t count ounces — feeding on demand is the guidance, and your baby regulates the amount. The volumes above are for formula; the number of feeds a day is still a useful reference point either way.

Working it out for your baby

The rule of thumb is 2.5 oz per pound of body weight a day (150 ml per kilo), spread across the feeds — capped at about 7 oz per bottle. Work it out with your baby’s weight →
