Feeding schedule for a 12-month-old baby
✓ Last verified against the official sources on September 1, 2026.
Eating with the family
Your child now eats what the family eats: vegetables and fruit every day, no added salt or sugar. From 1 year you can switch to whole cow’s milk — the AAP advises whole milk between 12 and 24 months.
What changes this month
From the first birthday the AAP advises whole cow's milk, continuing until age two. The bottle can go now: the sooner it does, the better for teeth and speech. Your child eats what the family eats.
An example day
This is what a day could look like. It is an example, not a prescription: your baby tells you when they are hungry, and that shifts from day to day.
Water and milk are the drinks; juice is better avoided before age 1 and limited after. Breastfeeding can carry on alongside for as long as you both want.
| Around | What |
|---|---|
| 7.30am | Breakfast with the family, cup of whole milk |
| 10am | Snack: fruit |
| 12.30pm | Lunch: sandwich with vegetables alongside |
| 3pm | Snack: yoghurt or a rice cake |
| 5.30pm | Dinner: whatever the family is having |
| 7pm | Cup of milk and bed |
The bottle is no longer needed — a cup will do. Keep cutting grapes and cherry tomatoes lengthwise until age 4.
What about breastfeeding?
With breastfeeding you don’t count ounces — feeding on demand is the guidance, and your baby regulates the amount. The volumes above are for formula; the number of feeds a day is still a useful reference point either way.
